Pre Conference Workshop: Kristin Ziemke - We Teach Thinking! Digital Curiosity Powered by Pedagogy
How deep is the ocean? Who invented Minecraft? What do kids in Australia study?  For years our students have entered our classrooms spurred by curiosity and wonder.  However, unless there was a text at their specific reading level, learners couldn’t find the answers to their questions.  Today, we have new tools that personalize learning and provide all students the resources they need to live curiously.  See how text, images, video and web tools can inspire students to read, write, think and wonder.  Learn practical strategies you can use tomorrow to question deeply, search effectively and capture student thinking.

Pre Conference Workshop: Lotta Larson - Reading 2.0: Transforming Literacy Instruction with e-Books, Audiobooks, and Digital Texts
This workshop will focus on research-based strategies for transforming literacy learning through the use of digital texts. How do we effectively engage students in the digital reading process, foster strategic readers of e-texts, use best practices, and interpret and apply current research to optimize digital reading and promote comprehension? By exploring various forms of digital texts (including online texts, audiobooks, e-books, and storybook apps) and instructional strategies for teaching digital reading, we will discover ways students can develop new literacies and thrive in the age of Reading 2.0.

Pre Conference Workshop: Troy Hicks - Make. Write. Repeat.

The "maker" movement has taken hold in education, and its core principles reward those who take risks, create, fail, reflect, and start the process anew. In what ways can we connect the ideas of "making" and "writing" to rethink literacy instruction? With examples from a number of teachers and by exploring many digital writing tools, we will discover opportunities for our students to make, write, and continue the process of learning over and over again. Come prepared with a laptop or tablet so you craft your own pieces of digital writing!

Keynote 1: Teaching Reading in a Digital World: The Changing Nature of Literacy
It is no secret that today’s students encounter and engage with tablet technologies, e-books, and digital reading in their daily lives. While there is still much to learn about the potential of e-books in schools, it is clear that effective e-book implementation can enhance students' literacy experiences. In this session, we will explore how students can benefit from the affordances of e-books and digital reading as they develop new literacies and become strategic readers of e-texts. In particular, we will discuss how teachers play a crucial role in helping students select and apply digital tools and features to meet individual learning need and personalize the digital reading experience.

Practitioner Workshop 1: Constructive or Confounding: Digital Reading for Learning Support and ELLs
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Overview: Technology has proven a tremendous tool in education, and yet it presents a continual challenge for certain student populations, such as Learning Support and English Language Learners. In these cases, technology and digital tools may distract, discourage and even debilitate reading. Students are facing technological interruptions which regularly pose new challenges to learning, especially in a 1:1 school environment. Where is the balance between innovation and disruption? How do we aid this distracted generation by teaching students to focus while reading?
In this session, we will discuss these issues in depth and offer practical solutions for the classroom. When used in structured ways, digital tools may offer students independent and personalized learning paths. We will look at action research results of using Kindle Immersion reading with both Learning Support and ELL students in middle school. Immersion reading features visual tracking, in-text dictionary definitions and audiobook sync. We will examine the effects of this e-book reader on reading speed, comprehension and student motivation of students who traditionally grapple with reading. Participants will leave will practical tips for using Kindles in the classroom and real-life solutions for focused use of digital tools with struggling readers.

Practitioner Workshop 1: From the Heart to the #Hashtag: Designing Learning Spaces that Build Community
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Overview: Teachers are designers (Wiggins and McTighe,2005).  We design learning experiences, create conditions for success and craft processes that enable intentional outcomes.  Designing the spaces where all this happens is a big part of that.  Our students spend most of their days in our classrooms and in the digital spaces we nurture. Evaluating, rethinking and creatively redoing these spaces with a designer’s mind and a teacher’s heart can make the difference in student engagement, agency and feeling like they belong.
In this session, we will look at effective learning spaces and how they might be designed in ways that go beyond just decoration. We will explore the power of themes and how the trust we build through our physical space traverses the digital spaces we use as well. We will discuss how we can use these spaces to show our own creativity and communicate to our learners just how much we value their space and how much they spend in it.  That they inspire us.  That we have their backs. That we are in this together.

Practitioner Workshop 1: Three digital tools that are successful with my IB students - FlipBoard, Kahoot, and Discussion boards
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Overview: “I'll take 'Don’t Make Me Illiterate for 1000' please, Alex!” To say that there is only one right way to ask a question and a single right answer is really putting our students in jeopardy.  Life doesn’t function that way, and the 21st century learners should be ready to question, answer and read in ways that are unconfined and free. Come find out how to build real-time content together with students for exploration, leading to improved reading and critical discourse skills through incorporation of digital tools.

We’ll focus on the use of three digital tools that are successful with my IB English and TOK students:

1) Flipboard to aggregate content of their choice over the various topics under Language;

2) Discussion boards on blogs for critical discourse;

3) Use of games for formative assessment in a fun, creative way for reading comprehension and writing improvement.

I’ve shared these ideas with my school’s other subject area teachers such as IB Econ and IB Chem, so these are tools that can be cross-curricular, developing stronger readers and writers in innovative ways that differentiates for myriad types of learners, especially in today’s world.

Practitioner Workshop 2: Showcasing to Global Audiences: Empowering Literacy Development in ELLs (English Language Learners)
Limited Capacity full
Adding this to your schedule will put you on the waitlist.

Overview: International schools have one thing in common:  the international demographic.  Learners, both in their staff and student body, come from everywhere in the world.  Classrooms, playgrounds, collaborative spaces, staff rooms are the modern day's Tower of Babel.  Undeniably this setup is unique since it creates an opportunity for communication in one common language, both socially and academically, regardless of first language background.
For learners from various language backgrounds, learning English within a rigorous curriculum can be quite a challenge. Applying it to show academic knowledge is even more daunting.  However, where ELLs struggle most is in using a language that is not their own to showcase themselves as individuals.  How can ELLs find their identity when they must use a language they were not born to use?  And how can we empower them to find it?
Encased walls of the classroom are a safe space for our ELLs, and using the language can become a somewhat trained and repetitive process.  But  when we open the doors to a global audience, we provide them with the opportunity to view themselves through a wider lens.
In this presentation, I will show empowering ways in which ELLs have been given the platform to publish and showcase themselves and their work via innovative tools.  I will emphasize the use of social media, blogs and podcasts, how one click, one tweet, one post can change the way ELLs see themselves as individuals.

Starting with considerations during the planning stages, we will then move on to highlighting the most effective uses of technology. Based on tried and tested lessons and methods, this presentation will focus on the use of the following:

  • How have we used technology to develop the literacy skills of our learners using Kahoot; No Red Ink; iBook; Google Docs; Google Sites; Google Apps + Addons.

Rather than focusing on set up, this will aid teachers to understand how to use these tools in the classroom within a unit of work through demonstration of what is possible. Reflecting on the use and introduction of the SAMR model, attendees will also leave with a set of helpful resources that will allow them to integrate technology in their own schemes of learning.

Practitioner Workshop 2: Using Augmented Reality for Book Reviews
Limited Capacity filling up

Overview: In this presentation, I will show how students in our school are using Augmented Reality (AR) apps like Aurasma to recommend and discuss books they have read. This has been a powerful way to get students to think about literacy and take charge of their learning in our Reader's Workshop. In my session, I plan to talk about the basics of how Augmented Reality works, several important tips for getting started including prompt questions, sound, backgrounds and logistics of setting up an "AR" corner of a classroom or a library. Participants can make their own AR videos in the workshop if they download the free app. The link to the video gives a sample of how the process looks in my classroom.

Keynote 3: Read the World: Literacies for a Digital Culture
Today’s digital classroom seeks to combine rich literacy instruction with 21st century tools to engage students in meaningful learning experiences. New devices invite students to read beyond the text and use multimedia--images, video, infographics--to add layers to their thinking. In this new learning landscape, we reimagine what it means to “read” and craft lessons that explicitly teach students to analyze a photo, closely read a video clip and infer an artist’s message. This session will investigate new entry points for all learners and share ideas for empowering students to go beyond the text to author their own content in this participatory digital culture.
